Renovated Factory, Now Dance Space, Transforms into Art Gallery for One Evening

Ann Arbor, MI June 12, 2004 -– To celebrate their 10th anniversary season, the Peter Sparling Dance Company (PSDC), Michigan’s premiere modern dance company, will be hosting a silent art auction, “Art at the Dance Gallery,” on Saturday, June 19th, at Dance Gallery Studio in Ann Arbor, MI, 815 Wildt Street, www.petersparlingdance.org, 734.747.8885.

Once a car manufacturing facility and ball bearing factory, this historic building was transformed into a beautiful, 5000 square-foot dance studio and home of PSDC in 2003. Now, for one evening, the space becomes an art gallery filled with featured works from 40 of the area’s top artists. Bidding begins at 7:00 p.m., and the auction closes at 10:00 p.m. Wine and hors d’oeurves will be served, and admission is $20.00 at the door.

Auction proceeds will benefit PSDC’s world premier of “Peninsula,” a performance which pays homage to unique Michigan people and places through live modern dance and video backdrops. The new choreography by Peter Sparling unfolds in three sections including: southeastern Michigan’s industrial heritage, the land and water above the 45th parallel and looking back to the glaciers that formed the two peninsulas and created natural resources such as copper and iron.

Co-presented by the Peter Sparling Dance Company and the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, “Peninsula” will premier June 23, 2004 at Ann Arbor’s Power Center. Beginning in the fall, PSDC will tour “Peninsula” throughout the Midwest including performances and residencies in Lansing, Canton, Monroe, Big Rapids, and Tecumseh, Michigan, and at the Chicago Humanities Festival.

“’Art at the Dance Gallery is a wonderful opportunity to view and purchase fine works of art by local artists,” states Carol Thompson, Dance Gallery Executive Director. “It is also a great place to meet new people, enjoy refreshments, and most importantly, contribute to furthering performance and art in the community and local region.”
